Verdict: the right email platform when the newsletter is a product in its own right, and the wrong one when it is a sales channel for the store.

What it does

beehiiv is a newsletter platform built by the team behind Morning Brew, and it treats email as a media business: writing, growth, and monetization are native rather than bolted on. You get an editor, a hosted website that doubles as your archive and SEO surface, a recommendation network where other newsletters send you subscribers, a referral program with milestone rewards, and, on paid plans, an ad network that matches sponsors to your list and paid subscriptions with no take rate.

For a brand, the use case is content: a weekly email that teaches something related to the product, builds an audience that is yours, and eventually pays for itself through sponsorships or a paid tier. That is a different job from the abandoned-cart and post-purchase flows that sell inventory.

Pricing (checked 20 October 2026, at 1,000 subscribers)

  • Free: $0, up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, templates, landing pages, the recommendation network, API access. One seat, one publication, 30-day analytics window.
  • Lite: $49/mo on annual billing (about $59 billed monthly). Paid subscriptions with a 0% take rate, ad monetization, automations, polls, A/B testing, custom domain, three publications.
  • Pro: $95/mo annual (about $109 monthly). Removes beehiiv branding, adds advanced analytics, webhooks, dynamic content, ten seats, priority support.
  • Enterprise: custom, with SSO and dedicated IPs.

Paid prices rise with list size (Lite is $139/mo monthly at 10,000 subscribers). The Lite and Pro trials need no card.

Who it is for

Brands with something to say every week: a founder voice, a category you can teach, an audience that would read you even if they never bought. The free plan to 2,500 subscribers is the most generous in the category, and the growth tools (recommendations, referrals, the website) are built for compounding a list from zero.

Who should skip it

Stores that need email to sell product. beehiiv does not know what a customer bought, cannot trigger on a cart, and does not sync with Shopify the way Klaviyo does. Running both is reasonable: Klaviyo for the store’s customers, beehiiv for the audience you are building in public.

Our stack

beehiiv is the platform behind the newsletters on our own sites, which is the honest basis for this review; it is not wired into the store’s order data and was never meant to be.

The honest caveats

Paid pricing climbs quickly with subscriber count, and the Free plan’s 30-day analytics window is tight. The ad network only matters once the list is in the thousands. Automations on Lite are capped at ten.

Bottom line

Start free, write for a year, and upgrade to Lite when the ad network or a paid tier becomes real money.
