Top-down Amazon market research: start from brands, sellers, and subcategories instead of one ASIN at a time

Verdict: the best sourcing tool for wholesale and arbitrage sellers, and an expensive luxury for most private-label brands.
Most Amazon tools start from a product and work outward. SmartScout starts from the market. Its databases cover roughly 500,000 brands, two million sellers, and 40,000 subcategories, each with estimated revenue, growth, seller counts, and Featured Offer (Buy Box) ownership. You filter the whole catalog by the shape of opportunity you want (a brand doing $200k a month with six resellers and no brand owner on the listing, say) and get a list to work, instead of poking at ASINs one at a time.
Around that core sit the usual seller utilities: a Chrome extension, a sales estimator, Search Terms Explorer and Rank Maker for keywords, Ad Spy and Share of Voice for watching competitors, a Buy Box Map, a Seller Map by location, and newer additions like TikTok Shop data, an AI listing writer, and an MCP server that puts the data inside your AI assistant.
No free trial. Every plan carries a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Yearly billing is offered at a discount on each tier. The affiliate program also issues a coupon code, BBS25, for 25% off the first three months; it works on any plan and we are told it is ours to share, so we have.
Wholesale sellers first. The brand and seller databases answer the questions that decide a wholesale deal (how many sellers, who holds the Featured Offer, whether the brand sells on its own listings) before you send a single email. Arbitrage sellers get the same benefit at the subcategory level. Agencies and aggregators use it to size up brands before a pitch, which is why the Business tier exists.
Private-label sellers who already pay for Helium 10 or Data Dive. SmartScout’s keyword tools are fine, but they are not why anyone buys it, and the market-level data matters far less when you own the listing and the brand. If you are launching your own product, put the $119 toward Data Dive and PPC instead.
We sell private label, so SmartScout is not in our daily rotation; our view is comparative. It is the tool we point wholesale and arbitrage sellers to first, ahead of Tactical Arbitrage, because it finds brands rather than individual flips.
The tier gaps are brutal. The seller-level data that makes wholesale research sing is on the $299 Business plan, and a seller doing under five figures a month will feel that. Snapshot revenue figures are modeled, so treat them as a ranking signal rather than a number to put in a spreadsheet. And the catalog is strongest on Amazon US; coverage of other marketplaces is thinner.
If you source from brands or subcategories, SmartScout is the strongest research tool in the category and worth Basic to start. If you build brands, it is a nice-to-have you can skip.
