Verdict: still where most private-label products start, and safe enough if you treat it as a directory of factories rather than a store.

What it does

Alibaba.com lists manufacturers and trading companies, mostly in China, Vietnam, and India, with product catalogs, minimum order quantities, and a messaging system for quotes. Trade Assurance holds your payment and gives you a dispute path if the order does not match the agreed spec or ship on time. Request for Quotation lets you post a spec and have suppliers come to you. Alibaba.com Logistics and the paid inspection service cover freight and quality checks if you do not have your own forwarder and inspector.

Fees (checked 20 October 2026)

  • Buyer accounts are free; there is no buyer membership.
  • Trade Assurance is free for buyers. You pay a payment-processing fee at checkout that depends on the method: cards run around 3% per third-party guides, while a bank transfer carries a flat charge. Alibaba’s own help page does not print the percentages.
  • Optional paid inspection service. Supplier memberships (Gold Supplier) are seller-side and tell you only that a supplier paid Alibaba, not that they are good.

Who it is for

Private-label sellers at the sourcing stage. The platform is the fastest way to get five quotes for a product spec and to find out what the real MOQ and unit cost look like before you commit to anything.

Who should skip it

Sellers who should be sourcing domestically or from a specialist agent: regulated products, anything where IP matters, and categories where a sourcing agent’s factory audit is worth more than any badge on a listing. Also skip ordering a container from a supplier whose samples you have not held.

Runs our store

Alibaba.com is where our supplier relationships began. The habits that protect the money: a written spec sheet with every order, a paid third-party inspection before the balance payment, and Trade Assurance on every transaction until a supplier has earned years of trust.

The honest caveats

Listed prices are opening bids. “Manufacturer” often means trading company. Trade Assurance disputes are slow and favor documentation, so document everything. And the platform’s own freight and inspection services are convenient, not cheap.

Bottom line

Use it to find and compare, pay through Trade Assurance, inspect before you pay the balance. No affiliate link live; the vendor link is below.
